| Why Bridges?
How did the
chicken cross the road? She crossed over the
footbridge, of course! Any informed bridge engineer can answer that
question because that is the basically the purpose of a bridge--to cross
over from one place to another, conveniently and safely. Bridges
have been constructed since the earliest times. In fact, you've
probably even crossed one of the most primitive bridges we know of when
you walked across a tree or sturdy branch to cross a stream. On this site
you will find historic and classic examples of five main types of
bridges. Visit each bridge site to learn about the particular
example, then click on the "Learning Links" to find out why each
is special and how bridge engineers decide which type of bridge is best
for the particular site they are designing a crossing for. |
